What Is Deck Steps & Stairs Installation?
Deck steps and stairs installation builds the stairway that connects your deck to the ground or between different deck levels. This includes stringers, treads, risers, and any required railings along the stairway. Getting stairs right is more technical than it looks, since consistent rise and run across every step is what makes a stairway feel safe and natural to use, and Excelsior, MN building codes set specific requirements for exactly this reason.
Why This Matters for Your Home
Inconsistent step height or depth is one of the leading causes of trips and falls on outdoor stairs, and it happens more often than people expect on amateur or poorly planned builds. A stringer cut even slightly wrong throws off every step above it. Stairs also take a disproportionate amount of wear compared to the flat deck surface, so stringers and treads need to be sized and fastened to handle concentrated, repeated load at each step.
Our Process
Calculate rise and run
We calculate exact rise and run based on the height being covered, ensuring every step in the stairway is precisely consistent.
Cut and install stringers
Stringers are cut accurately and fastened securely to both the deck structure and the ground or landing pad below.
Install treads and risers
Treads and risers are fastened with attention to overhang and edge finishing, both for appearance and to reduce trip risk.
Add stair railings
Railings are installed along the stairway where required, anchored into the stringers rather than just the treads.
What to Expect
Stair installation begins with precise measurement of the height and landing area involved, since this determines stringer length and step count. Most residential stair installations in Excelsior, MN are completed within a day, though wider stairs or stairs connecting multiple levels take longer. We check rise and run consistency at every step by hand before considering the stairway finished.
